Additional Studies in the Patient with a GIST Succinate dehydrogenase-deficient GISTs
If the clinical history is suspicious for a syndromic GIST and/or the morphology is suspicious (epithelioid GISTs for example), your pathologist can order an SDHB immunohistochemical stain to rule out the following syndromes:
- Carney Triad: GISTs, paraganglioma and pulmonary chondroma
- Carney-Stratakis: GISTs and paragangliomas
If SDHB is lost (negative) on immunohistochemical evaluation, that finding is compatible with a syndromic GIST and the patient will be able to get an appropriate follow-up.
